You can’t negotiate with terrorists
Trying to negotiate with that inner critic- the voice that says you’re not capable or smart enough or whatever- is a waste of your energy. That inner critic is loud and stubborn and only wants to tear you down. It’s like trying to negotiate with a terrorist.
Better to use your energy to recognize that the inner critic is gabbing again and that you’re going to let her while knowing in your heart that you are capable and even if you fall on your face, you’ll get up and keep going.
Another way to think about it is this- who is listening to that inner critic? YOU. The real you. I’m not saying you’re schizophrenic and are hearing voices; I’m saying we all have a true self who can listen to the nagging voice saying ‘you’re too this and too that and if only you did this…’
You can say out loud “Shut up!” if it helps you differentiate your true self from your inner critic, but know that it’s a matter of learning to tune her out rather than expecting her to stop. The best way to do this is through meditation or just focusing on honoring, loving and having compassion for the REAL you whose given this voice credence for so many years. I say, time’s up. Your true self wins from now on.
